Zermatt is a skiers delight as well as hikers. It
is a starting point for hikes into the mountains, including the route to
Chamonix in France. There are cable cars and chair life to carry skiers in the
winter and hikers in the summer. The highest goes to 3883m, to the Klein
Matterhorn. The Matterhorn offers spectacular views in all directions. You can
cross into Italy via the Cervinia cable car station. A spectacular open-air
railway runs up to the summit of the Gornergrat at 3,089m (10,134 ft). Zermatt
is also the western terminus for the Glacier Express rail service connecting to
St. Moritz. Zermatt is a care free zone. Skiing in Zermatt is split up into four
areas: Sunnegga, Gornergrat, Klein Matterhorn and Schwarzsee. Zermatt is known
throughout the world for its skiing, especially Triftji for its moguls. The high
altitude makes for skiing continuously. Zermatt is an all year skiing resort,
with summer skiing limited to the Theodulgletscher, behind the Klein Matterhorn.
But during the off season in May and June there will only tend to be one or two
runs open, and the main glacier area does not open until July. Zermatt is one of
the world's best winter resorts, combining excellent, mixed-ability skiing on
high, snow-sure slopes with breathtakingly beautiful scenery, a traditional
village, and with some of the world's best altitude dining and good nightlife.
