Hydra is one of Greece's most enchanting and
accessible isles, about an an hour from Athens, boasting a beautiful port,
it's serenity and island feel is added to by the fact that there are NO cars
or motorcycles allowed on the island at all. It's a walker's and
shopper's paradise, and also boasts museums, art galleries, splendid beaches
and some of Greece's finest restaurants. Hydra's
waterfront is one of the most charming in Greece, with numerous cafes,
restaurants, and tavernas where both locals and tourists alike gather. The
town is a captivating maze of characteristically Greek island style narrow
streets and has retained it's character and charm in part due to the Greek
Ministry of Culture who have gone to great lengths to maintain the
authenticity of this historical and cultural treasure. Additionally, there
are NO cars or motorcycles on the island (though donkey's often serve as
"taxis"). The island gained notoriety when Leonard Cohen began
visiting regularly in the 60's and ultimately bought a home there, helping
it to become such a haven for artists. Today the population is an
eclectic mix of locals, wealthy Athenians who maintain holiday homes here,
and enclaves of writers, and painters and sophisticated expatriates. There
are abundant swimming spots in some of the Med's finest waters, the closest
pebble beach is just 5 minutes from the harbor, and Kaminia Bay, is well
known and popular, or private boats can be rented to go to your own isolated
bay or cove from the hundreds available around the island. There are
beautiful hikes to monasteries perched high in the hills, through golden
hillsides alive with spring or fall wild flowers, purple sage, and olive
groves. Enjoy your own fine Greek villa rental on enchanting Hydra, in
the Saronic Gulf.
